Warped Little Minds

It is no secret that if I had my way I wouldn't have a TV in my home. I'm sure that the reality of not having a built in babysitter would wear off quickly but really it would be a good thing. I have been very strong in my opposition of paying for cable and buying a bigger, better TV. I was victorious until a few months ago when one of Matt's subcontractors talked him into buying his old TV. It was only $80 so that should tell you a lot. But it was an upgrade from the tube I bought the year after I graduated high school 11 years ago...talk about a great purchase. Well it is not an HDTV so we now have a converter box which means more channels. As long as I don't have to pay for them, fine and dandy. The boys were excited to find out that there is a channel that plays cartoons all day long. They are now Qubo fans. Since Rupert and Marvin: The Tap Dancing Horse aren't all that bad it seemed harmless. Oh, not so. This station has infomercials between cartoons! They aren't short little 2 minute clips but more like 10 and my boys are glued to the TV when they come on. They have memorized the catch phrases and even the phone numbers to call. Not good. The other day I heard Jason reciting the phrase for the Iron Man Gym, something about rock hard abs and bulging biceps, and then doing push ups and telling Braydon he wanted to get ripped. David even asked me if I thought Dad might like a certain thing. I wasn't sure what that thing was so I just played along and told him maybe. He said "OK, but it is not available in stores." What? They have been completely sucked in and no longer want to watch PBS. This makes me sad because not only is it "educational programming parents can trust" but there aren't any commercials and I don't hear "This is the song that never ends. It just goes on and on my friend..." Yep, time to delete Qubo on the remote settings.

Qubo does have Veggietales. Chris built a DVR computer (honestly it would have been cheaper to buy one) and so we record everything we watch so that we can skip commercials. My children have no idea what's on the Qubo channel because we don't watch live tv at all. If it's not recorded they don't know it exists. I don't know if they even realize they can just watch regular tv anymore.

I LOVE pbs. Only occasionally do we switch to Disney or even sometimes NickJr. But that is it. the commercials are horrible! Dalin used to be my "quote the commercials" kid. He once told me I smelled like a summer breeze. It was actually kinda cute in the beginning...but...

Totally had to laugh at that one. Jayce also sings Iron man regularly and I never knew where it came from.

We are a PBS only family, but we do have Netflix so we get new movies and that is great for when we go out, its movie night for the kids! So funny how fast kids pick up on things and repeat them. My kids saw Kung Fu Panda and the one phrase that has stuck is Oh, my tenders! Kids!
